CERAD data

CERAD (Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease) was a collaborative effort of many ADRCs and ADRCs. The original mandate of CERAD, begun in 1986, was to develop a battery of standardized assessments for the evaluation of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) who were enrolled in NIA-sponsored ADRCs or in other dementia research programs. CERAD concentrated on three major areas of evaluation: 1.) the overall clinical assessment of the dementing process; 2.) neuropsychological assessment of the specific manifestations of AD in a way which permitted determination of the severity of cognitive impairment; for this, a battery of relatively brief and reliable instruments was designed, and used to evaluate subjects with mild to moderate dementia, at entry and annually so that the natural course of the illness could be determined; and 3.) standardization of the neuropathological assessment of AD and related disorders. Neuropathological criteria for diagnosis of AD are included in this assessment.

During the period 1986-1994 CERAD developed an extensive battery of standardized instruments for evaluating AD and established an AD registry including longitudinal data on 204 black and 890 white patients with AD and 463 control subjects.
